Did The “Angelina Jolie” Factor Break Up Penelope Cruz & Javier Bardem?

What's going on with actress Penelope Cruz and Oscar-winning boyfriend Javier Bardem?  The couple is reportedly on the rocks – so what caused the rift?

Cruz and Bardem apparently had a deal to take a year-long sabbatical so they could concentrate on their relationship.  Penelope and Javier starred in Vicky Cristina Barcelona together and after filming, they agreed to take a break from work.  But Javier broke their deal by deciding to take a role in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's film Biutiful.

A source said, "Penelope and Javier wanted to take a year off after 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' to concentrate on their romance and spend some quality time together.  But Javier couldn't resist the chance to star in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's new film.

"Penelope is really angry because she turned down a few really good roles because she was so committed to their sabbatical."

But is there more to the story?  According to Penelope's brother Eduardo, Cruz is anxious to adopt a baby from India with Javier.  Maybe Javier is not ready to be a dad though?

Eduardo said, "She [Penelope] admires Angelina Jolie and has always said she wants to do the same thing.  She wants to adopt an Indian child when the time comes."

Penelope has also said that she'd like 20 kids.  "I'd love to have kids.  Maybe I'll adopt about 20 children – that's been my dream since I was a little girl.

Maybe Javier wasn't keen on being the next 'Brangelina' - perhaps having a football team (or two football teams) of children scares the crap out of him.

Bardem is now in Spain filming Biutiful.
