8-Year-Old Too Young to Divorce?

Posted by Cole Gamble at 5:15 PM on December 31, 2008

A Saudi court has decided an 8-year-old girl is not old
enough to file for a divorce. Is she too young to be married? Certainly not.

The child was married to an older man for a reasonable
$8,000 dowry. Wow, you do get some amazing deals during the economic downturn.

The young girl leads a normal kid life without the knowledge
of her nuptial status. The girl mother is the party who brought about the legal
action on behalf of said daughter.

It’s interesting how we react to cultural differences. Americans,
hell just about everybody outside of Saudi Arabia, would find this story appalling.
And yet it’s an age old religious practice in that country. Is it for us to say
its wrong? Um, yeah. More importantly, will this practice change anytime soon?
