Looking over my diary from last pregnancy, I’m amused to read that at by this stage last time, I’d painted the nursery and assembled the cot.
Hmm, this time around, all I have is an empty space next to my bed for a bassinette when we get around to buying one.
Poor child number two. I have at least done a quick cull of blue bunny rugs and made a mental note to pick up a few girly ones between say now and… when she arrives.
One thing I haven’t skimped on is the clothes. Oh, what fun it is to be able to finally embrace 75% of baby clothing stores. Boy’s clothes you see, are usually herded in to a small area isolated front the vast fields of pink. If you don’t want clothes with skulls or slogans like ‘bad boy’ your choices shrink dramatically.
The girl’s section on the other hand, is a rainbow-coloured wonderland of delightful prints and preciously detailed smocks.
Lucky for me, the mid-year sales have started early and I’ve been stocking up big time.
Here’s a little shopping list.
* Bébé by Minihaha for dressy infant outfits in lovely prints. This years reds and creams are are a lovely reprieve from relentless pink.
* Cotton On Kids for stretchy separates and all-in-ones in plain block colours with no annoying tags. A pair of purple ruched leggings are a bargain at $9.95.
* Online retailer Gymboree.com for bright, hard wearing co-ordinating outfits in a huge choice of styles. Check for their regular sales where items are often reduced to around the $US5 mark. Buy with a friend to cut down on postage costs.
* Country Road Kids for classic, good quality T-shirts and knits. Their regular sales off great discounts – sometimes more than 50% off.
* Plum for sweet newborn outfits from size 0000.
* Target for their new range of organic cotton spencers and the Baby Bonds range, including fleecy Wondersuits (perfect nightwear for newborns.)
So with that haul, along with the items passed down from generous friends, this baby already has a well-stocked wardrobe until the age of one.
And my mother hasn’t even started shopping yet!
