Well, how can anyone defend unrestricted ownership of matches and swimming pools? After all, these account for more children deaths than firearms. 

Along with guns, you have also tagged this story with stupidity. Therein lies your answer. That firearm would have been perfectly safe if securely locked away, in fact it would have been reasonably safe if the boy had had firearm safety drilled into him from an early age. A double failure of parenting is to blame here -- not the law.</description>
