They Say: Only Two Kid’s Cereals Good Enough For Everyday

Choice magazine recently tested 42 breakfast cereals marketed to kids. Scarily, only two were found to be nutritionally sound to eat every day – Sanitarium’s Weet-Bix Kids and Uncle Tobys VitaBrits Weeties.
The other 40 contained either too much sugar or salt, while some including Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain, Coco Pops Chex and Crispix Honey scored highly in both categories. Result! As reported in the SMH,
When it came to the nation’s best-selling cereals, Sanitarium’s Weet-Bix was the only brand to also make it into Choice’s top 10 healthiest list, while Kellogg’s Sultana Bran was classed as OK given its high quantity of fibre and mainly fruit-based sugar content.
I’m feeling a little smug here as my son’s daycare only serve Weetbix or Sultana Bran. But I’m not so smug, because I don’t think the cereal I’ve been eating is that good for me after all.
Since the last survey, some manufacturers have cut down on the sugar in their kid’s cereals, but added salt instead. Sometimes I think you need a degree in nutrition just to enter the shopping centre.
