Kids + Clothes = Crappy Gift?

gift box 300x214 Kids + Clothes = Crappy Gift? There were plenty of rocking gifts at my daughter’s birthday party over the weekend, but some of the best of the bunch were supposed to bore my daughter to tears.

At least that’s what my friend’s boyfriend said as she picked out a pair of shorts and two cute tops for the birthday party. You don’t get kids clothes for their birthday, he said. They’ll hate it.

It goes without saying that I love people who get my daughter clothes. A. She has enough toys. B. You’re saving me money and C. Did I mention she has enough toys?

But my daughter was just as excited as I was to see the tees (which she admittedly mistook for dresses – she bought a size up so she can grow into them) come out of the bag. And I didn’t have to lay down some lie about magic fabric.

Is it because I have a girl? Because I have tried to instill the value of being grateful for gifts? Or is it because clothes can be cool too – you just have to package them right? I’m hoping it’s the latter two (I bought a tee-shirt with a monster on it for my friend’s son, so let’s strike out number one).

Practical gifts they may be, but that’s all the more reason to get your kids on board. They can buy toys too, but if you’re really worried about kids being spoiled, maybe the simple answer is letting them understand the worth of every present.

So bring on the tee shirts. We’re equal opportunity gift receivers in our house. Do you give kids clothes for birthdays?
