Having done bed rest with all three pregnancies I know how hard it is for everyone. My third was the hardest - 17 weeks of combined modified activity and bed rest. Thankfully that pregnancy ended in a healthy term baby. My other two pregnancy where preemies (34 and 35 weekers).

An American online group - Sidelines (http://www.sidelines.org/) provides support for those on bed rest, as well as other high risk problems with pregnancy.

While the question is up in the air about what bed rest helps with, in my personal case I do think taking it much easier (which did mean stopping work) along side particular drug treatment enabled me to carry my third child to term.
