COMPETITION CLOSED – WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED BY EMAIL!
From singing cheesy Swedish pop with Meryl Streep to walking out of lakes in soaking wet breeches all the way to romancing the brilliant Bridget Jones, Colin Firth’s done it all. But the Brit actor’s latest filmic jaunt is a return to his more serious side. Directed by fellow countryman Michael Winterbottom, Genova is a gut-wrenching look at loss and mourning, set against the gritty titular city. Babble will be checking out the film in a few weeks (keep an eye out for the review), but in the meantime, we have 15 double passes to the advance screening to give away.
As we said, we haven’t seen the film yet – but the press release says:
From acclaimed filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart, Tristram Shandy, Wonderland) comes Genova, an intimate and beautifully nuanced familial drama about love, loss and forgiveness, set against the captivating beauty of a postcard-perfect Italian locale.
Following a tragic accident, Joe (Colin Firth) decides to leave behind his home in the United States – which holds too many memories – in search of a new start. With hopes that the change of setting will help to pull his fractured family together, Joe relocates himself and his two young daughters to the exotic town of Genova, Italy, where he accepts a position teaching at the local university.
As Joe rekindles an old friendship with university colleague Barbara (Catherine Keener), his daughters occupy their time by attending piano lessons and exploring the labyrinth-like laneways of the old city. Sixteen-year-old Kelly (Willa Holland) finds herself drawn into the sexy and dangerous underbelly of this mysterious new world, speeding around on Vespas and partying with the local boys, while the younger Mary (Perla Haney-Jardine), who is most clearly struggling with her grief, begins to have visions of her mother wandering the streets of the scenic northern Italian town.
An insightful exploration into the power of grief and the strength of family, Genova is enriched by the sensitively felt performances of its talented cast of both well established and up-and-coming actors. Visually exquisite and emotionally enthralling, this latest offering from the prolific Winterbottom will take audiences on a journey of the heart which they won’t soon forget.
Sounds hauntingly fantastic – we can’t wait to feast our eyes!
