Thank you so much! I have so many friends who always have spotless houses (even though they always manage to find some pitiful ‘mess’ to point out). I am not and never will be obsessive about cleaning. If it doesn’t kill me… it’ll build up my immune system.

What a fabulous article! I came across it by accident (when searching for a picture of Christmas beetles!), but you have the same philosophy about housecleaning that I have I have 10- and 12-year-old sons, and we have a lovely time playing and reading and having fun together. The hardest thing I have to deal with as parent is justifying to my own mother why I have no intention of keeping the house immaculate. Thank you for sharing your own thoughts.

Oh thank god! someone who tells it like it is! I’m despairing at the thought of all the extra cleaning involved when baby 1 comes in a couple of months- we haven’t even done the nursery yet! I’ve never been a neat freak, I’m better than I used to be but nothing is minimalist or spotless at home because it’s a never-ending task! the futility of it often drags me down in the dumps. I do what I can and thankyou for helping me see that that’s enough
