Jennifer Aniston is taking matters into her own hands. She doesn’t have a boyfriend and there isn’t any plans for one any time soon. But she’s setting out to Mexico to adopt a baby.

At least that’s what UK celeb mag Now is reporting. They say it’s her last desperate option if she wants to be a mother.

The quote from the magazine is actually really funny; “This is what she’s always wanted, a baby, and now it’s about to come true. She won’t let anything get in the way of her dream.”

“Jen has been ploughing money into the orphanage for years, just as her ex Brad has, and to adopt a baby from there makes perfect sense. She and Brad will never be — she knows that — but this bond through the baby will live on, no matter what. Brad and Angelina Jolie can never escape from that.”

That’s the silliest thing I’ve ever read! Besides maybe this post.

Jen did visit the orphanage and spent a lot of time with the babies there. The owner of the orphanage said, “She got on with all the children, but spent most of her time with the babies. She loved them. She was in the nursery for a long time, playing with them and cuddling them.”

If she does adopt, good for her. Maybe then we can move on from this whole Brad, Jen, Angelina triangle.

Now, months after the courts ruled in the Queen of Pop’s favour, Mercy’s dad and Madonna are going to have a chance to meet face-to-face..

Apparently, while Madge is in Malawi this week establishing a $US15M school for girls, she’ll take a side trip to meet with James Kambewa — the man who abandoned Mercy’s mum. From US magazine Us:

“Madonna wants to meet Mr. Kambewa because she does not want to deny Mercy her background,” a source tells Us. “Madonna wants to assure Mr. Kambewa that Mercy will not be delinked from her roots.”

While I think it’s cool that Madonna wants to keep Mercy connected to her roots, I don’t see why she feels that it’s necessary to assure Kambewa of anything. He gave up his paternal rights.

As you might expect, Mercy’s other relatives feel pretty much the same way. Says her uncle, Peter Baneti:

“We do not recognise Kambewa as Mercy’s father… He just came out of the woodwork to claim paternity while he was not there when my sister was pregnant.”

And although they had no children, they did try to conceive. Shortly before he died, Patrick told Lisa to fulfil their “baby dream”, and carry on his name.

“Before Patrick died, he told Lisa to pursue their baby dream,” said a friend of the pair. Swayze told his wife “how much it would mean to him for her to adopt and carry on the Swayze name.”

The source added, “Patrick said, ‘You were born to be a mum.’”

Patrick and Lisa did did conceive but miscarried in 1989. After that, they were never successful in getting pregnant again, and the couple, at the time, couldn’t bring themselves to adopt, according to Swayze’s memoir The Time of My Life.

I wonder if Lisa could adopt at this point? Or would it be too painful for her now that she’s lost the love of her life?

After last month’s whirlwind Elton John adoption saga (in which Sir Elton was determined too old and too gay to adopt by Ukrainian officials), it seemed that, despite adoption laws, there might be a happy outcome for Elton and baby Lev.

Now, with Lev’s alcoholic mother refusing to co-operate, the chances of Elton becoming an adoptive father are looking bleak.

The latest deal on the table would allow Elton to be a father-ish figure in Lev’s life, as long as he and partner David Furnish involve Lev’s mother. To what extent would she need to be involved? That we’ll never know, because she’s refused to work with Sir Elton. Bummer.

Lev’s mother, a 25-year-old alcoholic whose children were taken by social services, is still alive and believes that she’ll someday become reformed and get her children back. Says the mother:

“I will not give my baby to Elton John for any money.

I understand Elton’s feelings. Lev is a very sunny and cheerful boy. It’s impossible not to love him.

But I’m going to overcome my problems. I so much want my babies back.”

It’s pretty sad all around really. While the mother could choose to allow Elton and David to help raise Lev—and probably get set up in a nice flat in London, all expenses paid—she is clinging to the unlikely hope that she’ll shape up and get her kids back.

I sure hope she does, but in the meantime, why not let Elton and David take an active role in Lev’s life?

OK, it may not be particularly mind-blowing. Nevertheless, it’s undeniably sound advice.

When OK Magazine asked the breast cancer survivor and mother of adopted son two-year-old Wyatt whether she had any advice for Katherine Heigl (another newly adoptive parent), Sheryl had this to say…

“Grab sleep where you can,” Sheryl says. “One of the great things that my baby nurse told me was to talk to your baby all the time because it stimulates their brain, and they’re already starting to learn. Even though they’re not talking yet, they’re learning.”

Apparently, Sheryl is absolutely in love with parenting, even the difficult, kinda annoying parts. Say Crow:

“I love everything about being a mum. Even the terrible twos, which are terribly fun. It’s great. I love every second of it.”

Anita Tedaldi has written much about her family of five biological daughters. Despite a gaggle of children, Tadaldi felt here was room in her and her husband’s lives to adopt an additional child. The South American boy, referred to as “Baby D”, had been found by the side of the road. If anyone needed a family, it was he.

But after a year and a half, Tedaldi returned him.

Okay, maybe that’s a little coarse, but you tell me. Tadaldi went on the “Today” show and cited the baby’s inability to bond with her as the issue.

On one hand, Tadaldi’s move is a brave one. If she truly didn’t feel like she could love the child, giving him back may offer him a chance at a family that will.

On the other hand, children aren’t sweaters. Tadaldi says the experience with this adopted child just wasn’t the same as the feeling she got with her biological daughters. Probably should have seen that one coming. Under any circumstances, an adopted child offers challenges biological kid don’t. Here Tadaldi may have made a monumental miscalculation of her own heart. Tadaldi knew going in this might be a difficult child. No one knew his true age, his head had been flattened and his legs and arms lacked strength due to being left neglected in a crib. The boy had perhaps never known positive human contact. In her New York Times piece, Tadaldi stated,

“We had expected his indifference toward my husband, who was deployed for most of this time, but our son should have been closer to his sisters and especially to me, his primary caretaker.”

Tadaldi set certain expectations for this child that the child failed to meet. There are many circumstances that could possibly flesh out the story, make Tadaldi’s actions clearer, perhaps more sympathetic. But Tadaldi won’t disclose specifics and she’s got a right to her privacy.

How do you spend a year and a half with a child and feel nothing? Well not nothing, just no bond. She never committed to this child. The proof? The fact she even considered giving him back in the first place. Many parents have biological children with problems far worse than this adopted boy. But they struggle through the difficulty and pain because that IS THEIR CHILD. You do these things in life because there aren’t easier options. However; Tadaldi had an easier option and she chose to exercise it. The fact she even considered this child “returnable” shows she was never suited to mother him.

Yet, while for some people Tadaldi’s actions make no sense, in the end she did what was right. Thankfully, there was another family eager to take Baby D.

While I’m a huge proponent of adoption, I know it’s not for everyone. Some people can’t bond with an adopted baby like a biological child, and if that’s the case, they probably shouldn’t adopt. Tadaldi somehow mislead or misunderstood herself because I refuse to believe any “blame” for the lack of bonding lies on the baby’s shoulders. We can reasonably assume Tadaldi wouldn’t attempt to “give back” one of her biological daughters if said daughter were, say, autistic. There is a solid message here: we all fail at parenting now and then. Sometimes you might shock yourself with how callous your thoughts can become in your darkest moments. Tadaldi’s case is unique because where most of us have no choice but to get over it and move on, the choice was always there for her to quit.

Instead of keeping this story quiet, Anita decided there was something beneficial to telling the story. Do you agree? Why would she open this very private and sad story? Do you think it’s a helpful or damaging message?

Although John had previously stated that parenthood was not in his plans, after meeting the boy he said “Having seen Lev today, I would love to adopt him. I don’t know how we do that but he has stolen my heart. And he has stolen David’s heart and it would be wonderful if we can have a home. I’ve changed my mind today.”

Now he’ll have to change the mind of the Ukrainian government. A family minister there said that their adoption laws prohibit that an adoptive parent can not be over 45 years old (John is 62). Their laws also prohibit unmarried people to adopt and same sex marriages and partnership are not recognised. The family minister stated that “Foreign citizens who are single have no right to adopt children … and the age difference between the adopter and the child cannot be more than 45 years,” Pavlenko said. “The law is the same for everybody: for a president, for a minister, for Elton John.”

Do you think 62 is too old to adopt?

Over the weekend, Elton John announced that a new man had “stolen his heart”—a 14-month-old Ukrainian boy named Lev. Unfortunately for 62-year-old piano man, if he wants to have to adopt, Sir Elton’s going to have to overcome laws that discriminate against his age and his sexual preference.

In fact, there are all sorts of crazy Ukrainian laws that complicating Elton’s recent desire to become a father. The two big ones, of course, are the ones that straight up ban adoption for both same sex couples and those who are 45 years older than the adoptive children.

Elton John falls into both categories. Still, if Elton’s partner David Furnish were the one to legally adopt Lev, it could ostensibly be done.

Aside from all that, Ukraine adoption law states the siblings must be adopted together—and Lev has a twin brother that Elton would have to adopt as well. Oh yeah, and Elton would also have to give the child his Christian name, i.e. “Lev Eltonovich John.”

Even though Elton John obviously has the resources to take care of Lev, even in old age, I think it is fair to question whether Elton’s recent desire to be a daddy at 62 is a little hasty. I mean, he even says that the death of his friend Guy Babylon last week influenced the decision.

Although the legal opposition looks pretty insurmountable, lots of rules are bent for superstar celebrities. Do you think Elton has the power to pull a Madonna?

Moral of the story: if you’re a 62 year-old gay man in 2009, don’t go to the Ukraine to adopt. Maybe he should try Malawi?
