According to an insider close to John, the grieving father remains “firmly committed” to Scientology, despite reports that Church big wigs aren’t happy with his public acknowledgment of Jett’s disease.

John apparently doesn’t hold a grudge against the Church, which doesn’t acknowledge chronic mental illnesses or prescription medications used to treat them — even though it’s now generally accepted that John’s son Jett suffered from untreated autism.

Jett died of complications resulting from an apparent seizure brought on by his untreated illness back in January.

The Travoltas – John, Kelly Preston, and their daughter Ella Bleu, 9, stepped out on September 11, to promote their new Disney film Old Dogs.  It was the family’s first public appearance since Jett’s passing nine months ago in the Bahamas.

“The family’s surprise appearance took place Friday at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif. John held Ella’s hand as he helped Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook introduce the movie to fans. (All three appear in the comedy, which also stars Robin Williams).”

“I always appreciate the audience’s love for me,” he told the crowd. “I hope they love Old Dogs as much as we do because I’ve got my baby in it.”

Kelly was scheduled to speak about Jett at the California Governor’s Conference for Women last month, but decided it’s “too soon” to speak of her loss and cancelled her appearance.

Kelly Preston has cancelled a long awaited speech about the death of her 16-year-old son Jett, saying it’s “too soon” to speak of her loss.

The actress was scheduled to speak for the California Governor’s Conference for Women’s “Grief & Resilience” panel, but said she’s not prepared to do so.

In a statement, Preston revealed;

It is with my sincere apologies that I must pull out from speaking at (the) conference. I am sorry, but I truly believed that I could do it.  Otherwise I never would have said that I could. But I am still deeply in the process of healing, and it’s just too soon.”

Jett Travolta died in January after an apparent seizure. Both Kelly and husband, John Travolta, have kept a low profile since the tragic passing.

Maria Shriver, who is host of the conference, said she completely understood; 

“I know how hard it was for Kelly to make this decision and she has my complete support and understanding.  Everyone has their own path to healing and their own timetable for grieving.”

Was Scientology to blame for Jett’s death? Couldn’t have helped. A person like John Travolta’s son requires medication for serious illness, whether or not Scientology thinks said illness exists.

Of course, news like this has been a little too common as of late. We’ve seen many stories of parents arrested for denying medical treatment to their children because it “was against their faith.” How about you? Has religion ever asked you to do something as a parent that you believed belittled common sense?

Earlier this month, John gracefully bowed out of the promo tour for his action thriller Pelham 123, in order to be with his family as they reconcile their loss. Now, we know where the Travoltas went to ease the grieving process. They went on a South Africa safari, one of Jett’s favorite activities.

According to TMZ, the Travolta family, along with close friends, rented out the entire Eagles Crag Lodge in South Africa’s Shamwari Game Preserve as a sort of tribute to John and Kelly’s late son. Apparently, the Shamwari Preserve was one of Jett’s favorite places to visit.

Hopefully, the Travoltas found some kind of peace from the memorial safari trek.

There are some positive signs that they are emerging from the tragedy. Mother Kelly Preston is slated to costar alongside Miley Cyrus in The Last Song, which has already started  filming. John Travolta has even acknowledged that Jett may have been autistic.

A month and a half beyond the Travolta’s loss of their son, Jett, and the celeb parents are still working hard to cope. John, 55, and Kelly Preston, 46, are “regrouping and pushing through the grieving process,” a source says. “They are trying to grieve and return to some sort of normalcy for Ella,” their 8-year-old daughter.

Problem is, “life isn’t normal without Jett.”

All this while, John and Kelly have been staying out of sight for the most part in their Ocala, FL, house. It doesn’t make it easier that they’re also dealing with the criminal case in the Bahamas, where a politician and a paramedic attempted to extort $US25 million from the Travoltas after Jett’s death.

“They were so hurt by the moochers,” the source says. “But things have calmed down. Every day it gets better.”

Here’s hoping so. I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose your child, but at least they have Ella to keep them pushing onward.

The ‘mystery document’ reportedly at the center of the John Travolta extortion case has been revealed. Sources with knowledge of the investigation tell TMZ that the document is “an authorization for transporting Jett Travolta in the ambulance.”

TMZ says:

“We’re told John Travolta and Kelly Preston had an issue over where Jett Travolta should be taken for emergency treatment. We do not have further specifics, nor do we know why the alleged extortionists thought it was worth $US25 million to keep private.”

“The Nassau Guardian has published a story saying it’s a “refusal to transport” document. The paper cites the Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Marvin Dames, who says the document “is signed by a party when refusing, for example, emergency medical services from trained personnel.”

Our sources say John and Kelly did not refuse treatment for Jett, but had an issue over where he should be treated.”

Call me cynical, but I’m thinking this latest development is going to lead to lots of lurid speculation that Travolta and Preston somehow hindered treatment of their son. Let’s hope they leave these grieving parents alone.

There has been much speculation on Babble and in the wider media as to whether it was “untreated autism” that killed Jett Travolta. After speaking to autism experts, there is one thing that needs to be made clear: autism is not a fatal condition.  It is a brain development disorder, not a sickness. Some medications can be used to treat the associated symptoms so that, for example, a child may be able to integrate more easily into the school environment.
If Jett’s seizures were associated with autism (which at this stage the Travolta family are still denying), the seizures would have to be treated as a separate condition. TMZ reports that Jett was taking a drug called Depakote, a strong anti-seizure medication. There have been reports Travolta refused to give his son anti-seizure meds because of Scientology but it apapears that those stories are not true.

From TMZ:

“Jett had been having seizures on an average of every four days, until he started taking Depakote. Ossi and McDermott say the drug initially worked, reducing the frequency to approximately once every three weeks.

Jett took Depakote for “several years,” but it eventually lost its effectiveness, according to Ossi and McDermott. They say the Travoltas were concerned about possible physical damage. And, Jett went back to having around one seizure a week. So Travolta and Preston, after consulting neurosurgeons, stopped administering the drug. No one is suggesting withdrawal of the medicine in any way caused the fatal episode.”

In addition, a Scientology spokesperson, Tommy Davis has said that the church has no policy on whether autism is real or fabricated. It is not addressed in church practice. He claims that the church would never interfere with a doctor’s prescription for a medical condition such as seizures.

The church would have told the Travoltas to do whatever their doctors prescribed, Davis said. He has known John for 30 years and Kelly for 18, and was present for Jett’s birth. The boy, he said, has always received the best medical care.

We appreciate the autism advocates who have contacted us to correct false reports, and our hearts continue to go out to the Travolta family who are still mourning the tragic loss of their young son.

There is a huge outpouring of support for the Travolta family during this time of need. They are very fortunate to have such a large group of fans, friends and relatives. This is a video of Billy Ray Cyrus expressing his condolences to the family.

The two families became close while filming Bolt.

I feel so bad for the family, I can’t even imagine the pain they are experiencing. A parent should never have to bury their child. Ever.

The Travolta family, in their time of grief, have released some private photos of their precious son. Jett Travolta, 16, passed away on Friday and John and Kelly are trying to make sense of their loss. They’ve thanked the public for their outpouring of love and condolences during these difficult days.
